Tree Stewards’ Tree Nursery

May 16, 2014

Lester and sonsRobin Hanes writes: “The Tree  Stewards’ wonderful Tree Nursery is nearby Jay Gillenwater’s Grandview Nursery. Manager Lester Henderson and his sons (seen l. to r., Chad, Joe and Matt), made frames to hold the tall pots up, built potting tables, hauled the soil into a walled mound and built a large tent. We just missed yesterday’s downpour at our big potting event. Huge thanks goes to Jay for his generosity, this temperate location and to Lester’s care all year long. They are the backbone of this project!

I must brag on the Potting Event Thursday. I counted 18 excellent volunteers! We potted 555 trees with 3 batches of extras healed in for the future. It took from 8 am to 12:30, leaving the place tidy, a multitude of trees given a kind world to start in. Now that is big canopy for the Charlottesville area. We are hoping for an Amazing Fall Tree Sale, in October!”

Hi. I’m so glad your group exists. I missed last year’s sale. What is the date for this fall? And do your trees for the sale include any shrubs? Thanks.

Robin Hanes writes: “Thank you for your interest. We are still working on when the fall sale will be, but it will definitely happen. The date we would like is October 11. It may be a single event this year. You can write me at to check in near October if you don’t hear it through the press.
In terms of shrubs, we have hazelnuts again, aronia, passum haw viburnum, buttonbush, elderberry primarily, a couple of nanking cherry and black haw viburnum.
Hope to see you in October!”
