Representatives of the Charlottesville Tree Commission, Tree Stewards and the Virginia Department of Forestry celebrated Arbor Day on April 26 at a ceremony in Market Street Park. We celebrated the huge Basswood Tree, the fact that Charlottesville continues to be honored as a Tree City USA, and the tradition of Arbor Day. The Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards recognized the Basswood as a Landmark Tree, as well as the White Ash behind the Albemarle Historical Society. The city has been treating this historic ash tree against Emerald Ash Borers, which are now killing off all untreated ashes in the east.
