If Trees Could Talk: Hidden Stories, Past and Present

Join Devin Floyd, Director of the Piedmont Discovery Center at one of the most diverse landscapes in the state of Virginia for an exploration of trees.
Trees are significant windows into the past and future, due to the predictable relationships they have with different landforms, physiography, geology, climate, and land use history. This immersive field excursion will explore concepts like forest succession, “old growth” forests vs. grasslands (and the roles of trees), remnant or “witness” trees, fire and other missing natural disturbance regimes, determining age, disjunct species, and indicator species.
We will also cover basic identification methods for about 50 of the most common trees and shrubs of the Central Virginia Piedmont. Participants will learn how to identify certain trees and learn more about the stories they tell.
Limited to 30 participants – Please register on Eventbrite.

The digital collage created by Devin is a historic projection to the year 1300 and combined with a modern view of the Visitor Center. It’s a thought-provoking image, regarding trees.
